Hoag's Object is an unusual ring galaxy in the constellation of Serpens Caput. It is named after Arthur Hoag, who discovered it in 1950 and identified it as either a planetary nebula or a peculiar galaxy. The galaxy has a D25 isophotal diameter of 45.41 kiloparsecs (148,000 light-years).
Central Core: A solid, nearly spherical ball of older, reddish-yellow stars resembling a standard elliptical galaxy.Outer Ring: A nearly perfect, luminous circle composed of young, hot, massive blue stars.The Gap: A wide, seemingly empty void separating the central yellow nucleus from the outer blue ring, though faint star clusters may exist within it. Size: The entire galaxy spans roughly 120,000 light-years across, making it slightly larger than our Milky Way.Background Oddity: In detailed photos like those from the Hubble Space Telescope, a faint object resembling another ring galaxy is visible inside the gap at the one o'clock position.
