Messier 110

Messier 110

Messier 110, or M110, also known as NGC 205, is a dwarf elliptical galaxy that is a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy in the Local Group.

Type: Dwarf elliptical galaxy (peculiar/dE5), featuring a smooth, nearly featureless structure and subtle central dust lanes.Distance:  About 2,690,000 light-years from Earth.Constellation: Andromeda. Apparent Magnitude: Roughly 8.0 to 8.9. Stellar Population: Contains around 10 billion stars. While mostly populated by older stars typical of elliptical galaxies, it uniquely houses a population of young, hot blue stars and at least eight globular clusters. Relationship: It is a prominent satellite companion of the larger Andromeda Galaxy (M31) within our Local Group.

Discovery: Discovered by Charles Messier in 1773, though he mapped it in relation to Andromeda rather than formally listing it. It was officially added to the extended Messier catalog later in 1967 by Kenneth Glyn Jones. Viewing: Best observed during the autumn months (particularly November). Through a small telescope, it appears as a faint, diffuse oval patch of light near the core in Andromeda. Image Credit European Space Agency
