Messier 46 (M46) is a rich open star cluster in the constellation Puppis, containing about 500 stars and located roughly 5,000 light-years away, making it a popular target for amateur astronomers. A notable feature is the planetary nebula NGC 2438, which appears to be inside M46 but is actually a foreground object, as it's much closer to Earth and not physically related to the cluster. M46 is easily visible with binoculars and is often observed alongside the nearby open cluster M47.
