Messier 47 (M47 or NGC 2422) is a bright, young open star cluster in the constellation Puppis, located about 1,600 light-years away, known for its hot, blue stars and a few orange giants, making it visually similar to the Pleiades but without the surrounding nebula. Discovered by Hodierna before 1654 and later cataloged by Messier, it's a relatively sparse cluster with about 50 stars, estimated to be 78 million years old, and lies near the older, more distant Messier 46.
